God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” —Genesis 1:28
The personal identity that God gives to human beings comes with its own set of blessings by default. The position of being sons and daughters of God results in the privileges of being sons and daughters of God. Position is the cause. Privilege is the effect. Position is identity. Privilege is the expression of that identity.
The blessing of being fruitful, living in increase, filling, subduing and dominating the earth was the result of Adam and Eve’s position as children of God. Had they continued to live in the garden, they would have built great corporations, developed extravagant arts cultures and given birth to geniuses in every one of mankind’s endeavors. Unlike the prodigies of today, they wouldn’t have self-destructed as a result poor decision making or committed suicide after having achieving greatness. They wouldn’t have killed one another because of their differences.
Why? Because Adam and Eve’s privilege did not define their self-worth, their self-esteem or their personal identity. Instead, their position as children of God satisfied them completely, and they knew their accomplishments were a result of that status. All that they achieved was from an overflow of who they were in that relationship with God. Their inner experience defined their external expression and value.
The incredible spiritual communion between God and humanity puts to rest every need that stems from our own lack of self-worth. This inner connection, available to us today, is what combats the constant demands of our minds and bodies. The spiritual has the ability to perfectly satisfy the physical, because the spiritual gives perfect meaning to the physical. How incredible to live life by merely experiencing the identity already given to us, instead of striving to gain one that’s vastly inferior!
